James Stewart absolutely steals the show in this quaint fantasy about a man and his friend – an invisible six-foot rabbit, named Harvey! Elwood. Stewart is the only one who can actually see Harvey, which rather upsets his confused and embarrassed family; especially high-strung long-suffering sister Veta Louise Simmons (Josephine Hull, who picked up an Academy Award in the Best actress in a supporting role category).
Stewart is so unassuming, pleasant and genuinely lovely it’s hard to feel anything other than affection for him. Full of slapstick humour, miscommunication, warnings of ‘normal people’ then ironic twists and humanitarian speeches, the film dotes on Stewart’s reliance on his friendship with his pal Harvey.
In essence rather a silly fantasy its hard not to actually believe Elwood and rally behind his lifestyle and choice of friend. He lives by his mother’s motto: mother gave him: "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Elwood's response: "For years I was smart; I recommend pleasant!"
This whimsical feel-good movie about a man who really wants to escape reality is jam-packed with innocence, acceptance and messages of individuality and living life without fear - a beautiful comedy or errors.
‘Harvey’s is one of cinema’s best-loved creations.
