Writer / Director Francois Ozon’s films are mostly memorable and distinctive (In The House, Swimming Pool, 8 Women) and here is no exception – here he focuses on the gorgeous 17 year old Isabelle (Marine Vacth), from a wealthy Parisian family who strategically loses her virginity on a family summer holiday then develops a side-line in high end prostitution. The film takes place over four seasons, each one seeing her development and four songs telling something of her character and place. | Subtle themes of adolescence and sexual awakening run through the film alongside some sexually explicit scenes, which add depth and meaning to her journey. This elegant and well-observed melodrama is keen to push the limits whilst appearing in a relaxed and natural format – an intriguing and compelling watch. |
