JEUNE ET JOLIE

6/5/2014

Writer / Director Francois Ozon’s films are mostly memorable and distinctive (In The House, Swimming Pool, 8 Women) and here is no exception – here he focuses on the gorgeous 17 year old Isabelle (Marine Vacth), from a wealthy Parisian family who strategically loses her virginity on a family summer holiday then develops a side-line in high end prostitution.

The film takes place over four seasons, each one seeing her development and four songs telling something of her character and place.

Subtle themes of adolescence and sexual awakening run through the film alongside some sexually explicit scenes, which add depth and meaning to her journey.

This elegant and well-observed melodrama is keen to push the limits whilst appearing in a relaxed and natural format – an intriguing and compelling watch.
